Artist of the fortnight: Henry Rollins
Spoken-word firebrand and Black Flag legend Henry Rollins is probably better known as an orator, writer, journalist, actor, publisher, philosopher and "aging alternative icon" (his description) these days than as a singer...
There will be no fucking around, tears before bedtime, bullshit detector set to Vaporise, etc next week when spoken-word firebrand and Black Flag legend Henry Rollins terrorises Vicar St (intellectually speaking of course) next Monday, March 10th. Probably better known as an orator, writer, journalist, actor, publisher, philosopher and "aging alternative icon" (his description) these days than as a singer, he'll doubtless have a few choice things to say about American foreign policy, among other things. Fans will want to bone up on his work in the meantime (start with Unwelcome Songs: Collected Lyrics 1980-1992 and [our favourite book title ever] Get in The Van: On The Road With Black Flag, by Rollins himself). And, he's our Archive Artist Of The Week, so be sure to read these. We mean, like, BE SURE TO READ THESE. Not reading them is not an option. Frown. Glower. ..Sigh. The hotpress.com desk just does not do scary authoritarianism like Hank does:
interview, May 1993: "Jackass of all trades":
interview, February 1999: "The last great American male" (incredibly, incredibly revealing - for ANY performer, never mind Henry bleedin' Rollins - AND he refers to U2, in the most glorious fellow-rock-star diss we have ever heard, as "the most bogus Exxon Death Star of music"):
interview, March 2000: "Freak magnet":
