Apocalypso
It’s the ‘80s! I’m off to the dole office... See you in Americay
“Ah,” I thought, “80s electronic pop with a bit of a post-rave sensibility” and then I started kicking myself in my own testicles until the self-loathing stopped. It’s not that Ausie electronic purveyors The Presets are bad, it’s just they’re so arch they’re Romanesque. Which is a bit of a shame, because some of the anthemic chest pumping on display here is quite addictive and I should imagine if I still frequented da clubs, it would be the kind of music I’d listen to when doing my nails, poufing up my hair and choosing the correct parachute pants. ‘My People’ for example, is a pretty nifty bit of cluberotica – “I’m with all of my people. Party time with my people. Let scream if you’re with me.” Indeed it’s the kind of message which if put across by the government would have carried the Lisbon referendum. Unfortunately, I already lived through one ‘80s and if the mass unemployment, tax rates and national debt do return I think I’ll stick to Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Blind Date for my hedonistic comforts.
Key Track: ‘My People’
