Album Review: The Temper Trap, Sungazer
Millennial Optimism is back - 7/10
For many, The Temper Trap are synonymous with ‘Sweet Disposition’ – the indie anthem that became the soundtrack to 500 Days of Summer and a generation raised on Tumblr. Rather than chasing that moment, the Australian band revisit its spirit, while pushing their sound in subtly adventurous directions.
‘Lucky Dime’ sets the tone, with shimmering synth-pop textures, crisp indie-rock guitars and an irresistible momentum. Dougy Mandagi’s falsetto remains the emotional anchor, gliding over cinematic arrangements, pounding drums and chiming, delay-soaked riffs that give the album a dreamlike quality.
This collection broadens their palette, without abandoning their danceable flair. ‘Bird On A Wire’ captures everything they do best: heartfelt lyricism, euphoric builds and choruses destined for festival sing-a-longs.
There’s an unmistakable early-2010’s nostalgia running through the record, but it never feels dated. If anything, its earnestness is refreshing. Not every experiment lands: the title track slows the pace, prioritising introspection over the towering instrumental pay-off that has long been their greatest strength.
Even so, the album’s themes of longing, heartache and existential uncertainty resonate deeply. In an era increasingly defined by irony, their unapologetic sincerity could be the soundtrack to another generation’s coming-of-age story.
- Out now.
