Album Review: 'Refit Revise Reprise' from Damian O’Neill & The Monotones
Undertones guitarist revisits the archives.
Released as part of a Pledgemusic campaign, Refit Revise Reprise is both a statement of intent from punk legend O’Neill, and a love letter to his musical youth. Featuring a bunch of new songs alongside a fistful of remodelled Undertones and That Petrol Emotion material, this odds and sods collection is well worth a listen.
Opening strongly with an impassioned reworking of The Sin Of Pride favourite ‘The Love Parade’ – which pushes the ‘60s garage rock vibe further – O’Neill sounds likes he’s relishing the opportunity to experiment.
‘Everlasting Breath’ is a trippy, xylophone and Theremin laced delight, while the Byrds-tinged ‘Just Wanna Be With You’ proves the Undertones man hasn’t lost his talent for catchy pop-rock songs. Granted, the instrumentals (‘Mundanian Dream’, ‘No Time Like The Noir Time’) have a faint sense of filler, but on the whole, this is a feast for punk fans.
