Album Review: Honey
RETURN OF THE LONDON UNDERGROUND
Katy B shot to fame following the release of her deliciously grimey debut On A Mission in 2011. The more radio-friendly Little Red followed in 2014, and now, the 27-year-old Londoner is back with Honey – a return to her beloved club roots. It’s a hugely collaborative project: the singer has opted to work with a whole host of dance, drum ’n bass and garage producers – and the results are impressive.
Highlights include tasty Four Tet collab ‘Calm Down’, club banger ‘Dreamers’ (Hannah Wants) and hypnotic dancefloor filler ‘I Wanna Be’ (Chris Lorenzo/ Geeneus). At times there is a lack of edge: drum ’n bass offering ‘So Far Away’ falls just shy of the mark. But ‘Who Am I’ (Geeneus/ Jr. Blender/ Diplo) is a catchy slice of R&B featuring Craig David and Major Lazer. Overall, Honey is an enjoyable ode to those late nights on the flo’ you just don’t want to end, and feels like a natural progression for Katy, whose voice is as alluring and accessible as ever. Well worth a listen.
