Laura Jane Grace took a stand against the state's controversial "bathroom law" by destroying the document while shouting "goodbye gender!".
Laura Jane Grace set her birth certificate alight on stage in North Carolina last night as a protest against the state's recently passed HB2 law. The new law states transgender people must use the bathroom of their biological gender rather than the gender they identify as.
Against Me! were performing at the Motorco Music Hall venue in Durham when Grace made her protest against the law which many have claimed is damaging to and dangerous for transgender people. Grace took a lighter to the birth certificate which says she was born a boy. One fan captured the moment of the burning and camera and uploaded it to Twitter. In 2012 Grace came out as transgender and announced she was planning the transition from male to female.

As a result of the new law in North Carolina a number of musicians cancelled gigs there including Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr and Pearl Jam. Against Me!, Mumford and Sons and Fatger John Misty decided to go away with their scheduled shows and donated the proceeds to local LGBTQ charities.
