Something is happening here… A Walk Across The Rooftops is drawing me in.
The Blue Nile are a Scottish trip whose work owes more to the Associates and their charms than to the more guitar orientated bands like post-Postcard Orange Juice and their ilk.
The Blue Nile offer room to move, sketching rather than lavishly painting the production, hinting at memories and emotions, at landscapes and landmarks.
With the exception of the single 'Stay' I doubt you will find yourself humming many of the songs – it's not that kind of album. 'A Walk Across The Rooftops' is a record which beckons rather than calls. It asks for time and thought. Its quiet reflection made me think at times of Tom Waits (don't ask me why. Just listen to 'Easter Parade') or of Norwegian band Fra Lippa Lippi whose music has a similar haunting quality.
I'm still being drawn in, still tentative – but I've heard enough to know that the Blue Nile are something special. A diversion, a tangent, maybe not chart success – they lack this instant appeal – but most certainly artistic success. Discover the Blue Nile for yourself.
