Mental Health Week Is the Perfect Week to start your Mental Health Journey
Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) urge public to consider counselling this mental health week
October 7th - 13th is Mental Health Week in Ireland, and the IACP calls for people to consider adding counselling/psychotherapy to their mental fitness regime. Counselling/Psychotherapy is a great support in times of crisis. It provides professional assistance to people experiencing personal issues and can alleviate them.
A nationally representative general public survey commissioned by IACP and carried out by Behaviour and Attitudes (B&A) reveals that two thirds of Irish adults would be likely to see a counsellor or psychotherapist if they’re struggling with their mental health, and more than nine in ten say that it’s a good idea to see a counsellor or psychotherapist if a person is struggling. IACP CEO, Lisa Molloy says, “These numbers are very promising, we’re definitely seeing a greater acceptance of the value of counselling and psychotherapy in the general public”. Ms Molloy continues to say ‘The IACP encourages those who wish to take that first step towards counselling to call us or visit our website. We have members throughout the country who can provide you with assistance’.

The IACP offers the following advice to those who are considering seeing a counsellor or psychotherapist:
• Be prepared to see more than one counsellor/psychotherapist, you will be embarking on a relationship and you may not gel with the first counsellor/psychotherapist you meet.
• Counselling/Psychotherapy will not “fix” your problems right away, it is a long process that will require your patience.
• A client’s first contact with a Counsellor/Psychotherapist is usually by telephone to arrange an appointment.
• At the initial appointment the following is normally agreed: The Client’s situation/issue, the frequency of therapy sessions, the duration of therapy, confidentiality, therapist’s fees.
• If you are interested in finding a therapist in your area, please call 012303536 or log on to iacp.ie.
