Mental Health Special: How The Humans Givens Therapy offers Solution-Focused Therapy
In Ireland, we are finally waking up to the fact that our mental health is as important as our physical health. If you find yourself suffering from depression or anxiety; from eating issues, sleep disorders or OCD; or if you have problems in your relationships or work-life – then maybe it’s time to reach for a helping hand.
Human Givens Therapy is a brief, solutions-focused therapy that works to relieve symptoms of distress, fast. A practical, pragmatic approach, it integrates the most effective, evidence-based techniques from a range of clinical disciplines. By incorporating elements of CBT, Neuropsychology, and Positive Psychology, Human Givens Therapy seeks to deliver targeted therapy that dissolves or diffuses trauma and PTSD; and builds effective plans to meet innate needs, and to return clients to their healthier selves.
The central tenet of the HGT approach is that we all have innate needs that should be met in a balanced way. If we meet these needs by correctly using our innate resources, we will remain well. The key disruptors that prevent us from meeting our needs are: past trauma, missing coping skills, mis-use of resources, and/or a toxic environment.
According to Human Givens therapist Cathriona Edwards, “Most of us have had experiences that we have found difficult to process. They play out in our present, meaning we don’t function optimally. As a way of approaching our mental health, Human Givens seeks to dissolve those past difficulties through a simple, safe technique called the ‘rewind’.”
___________
Sessions last up to 90 minutes and involve a mix of elements, such as:
• A Needs Audit
What needs are being met/not met. This forms a map on which to focus actions.
• Psycho-Education
Learn how your brain works and how you can help it to work better.
• Trauma Treatment
Dissolving and diffusing traumatising or difficult experiences in your past.
• Deep Relaxation
It is necessary to be able to decompress and manage our hard-wired tendency to worry.
• Visualisation
We can harness the power of our brain to orient us to positive outcomes, rather than catastrophised eventualities.
• Goal-Setting
Future and solutions-focused, this helps us to get out of cycles of negativity and rumination, and to take action, fast.
