A 20-minute drive from Limerick City, this beautiful village pub has been winning fans – and awards! – since 1987. The last time we came off the M7 at Exit 27 to visit them, Roast Poussin with Duck Fat Potatoes, Roasted Veg & Red Wine Jus and Seared Fillet of Sea Bass with Pancetta, Samphire & Cannellini Stew were among the chalked-up specials. They do a mean Bangers & Mash using sausages from their neighbours at Crowe’s Farm, and champion other local artisan producers like Adare Farm Ice Cream – you have to try the Chocolate Chip – and the White Gypsy Brewery whose Blond Weiss Beer on draft is a lovely drop. Live music at the weekends adds to the fun. If you’re stuck in the capital and suffering withdrawal symptoms, fear not, there’s another Matt The Thresher at 32 Pembroke Street Lower, Dublin 2.
