Q+A: Lawson Mpame on Movember and staying healthy
A stylist and blogger who has worked with Alex Gough, Lawson Mpame has been connected to the Movember campaign for several years. We spoke to him about Movember's importance, cooking and more.
Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale. The charity raises funds to deliver innovative, breakthrough research and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier and longer lives.
In addition to tackling key health issues faced by men, Movember is working to encourage men to stay healthy in all areas of their life, with a focus on men staying socially connected and becoming more open to discussing their health and significant moments in their lives. The charity’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.
How did you first get involved with the Movember campaign?
I've been with Movember for three years. I had cancer, and my grandfather also died from prostate cancer, so it's something that's really close to my heart.
We did a video last year, and I got to talking about my experience. I brought in my friends to do a little chat and workout video series, about staying fit and staying connected. That's what Movember's all about. It really is an amazing charity, they helped me at the lowest point in my life. And especially around Christmas time, things are hectic and you barely get to see people. It's a really good time to check in with your friends, and Movember is a great way to remind people to do that.
And Christmas is going to be even more different, this year...
Exactly. Especially now, something like Movember never been more important. We've got a constant barrage of negative things all the time, with the news and the pandemic. You have to find new and innovative ways to work on yourself.
What have you been doing to keep yourself healthy and sane over lockdown?
Every week, my friends and I have a workout and a chat over zoom. I've also been cooking a lot. I have a cooking page, but I've been finding new recipes and trying out new things. I've been using the time to get creative. My creative outlet is styling, and that's obviously gone now. Trying to create a beautiful plate of food is a really good way to get that back, for me.
