Audiovisual company Dolby hiring staff for new Dublin office
Dolby licenses its technologies to consumer electronics manufacturers.
US audiovisual company Dolby has registered an Irish entity with the Companies Registration Office, according to the Irish Independent.
It has since been confirmed that Dolby Laboratories (valued at €7.7 billion) is hiring staff in Ireland for a brand new office in Dublin.
The US-headquartered outlet specialises in audio noise reduction, audio encoding/compression, spatial audio, and HDR imaging for music, cinema, movies, TV and gaming. Dolby Labs was founded by Ray Dolby in London in 1965.
The founder (who died in 2013) invented the Dolby Noise Reduction system that year; a form of audio signal processing for reducing the background hissing sound on audio tape recordings.
He moved the company headquarters to the US (San Francisco, California) in 1976. Since then, Dolby introduced Dolby Surround 7.1, and set up theatres worldwide with 7.1 surround speaker setups. The first film to be released with this format was Pixar's Toy Story 3. About 80 per cent of films released are now mixed in Dolby Surround 7.1 by default.
Dolby launched a developer platform, Dolby.io in May 2020. It's aimed at providing to developers a self-service access to their technologies through public APIs. It allows any person, organization, small and big, to integrate in their websites, apps, games, etc. features such as media enhancements and transcoding, spatial audio and high quality video communication, low-latency streaming.
The number of staff needed for Dolby Labs' Dublin office is unconfirmed, but the news is sure to provide a boost.
