Watch: New Saipan trailer gives glimpse of Éanna Hardwicke as Roy Keane and Steve Coogan as Mick McCarthy
Saipan is produced by Kneecap filmmakers Trevor Birney and Oliver Butler
A new trailer for the upcoming film Saipan has been released, starring Éanna Hardwicke as Roy Keane and Steve Coogan as Mick McCarthy.
The movie is centred around the public feud between Republic of Ireland football captain Roy Keane and his national team manager, Mick McCarthy, during the team’s preparations in Saipan for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Keane had problems with the preparations of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), and publicly challenged McCarthy on multiple occasions.
He questioned McCarthy's competence as manager, alongside citing issues with the conditions of the camp, travel arrangements, strategy, and diet.
Ultimately, Keane quit the team, despite being a key player for the squad. The feud sparked a heavy public debate over who was to blame for the incident.
In a recent interview with Best of Ireland, former team member Niall Quinn shared his opinion on the upcoming film: "I'm delighted, because the guy playing me is quite a handsome fella." The Irish footballer will be portrayed by Game of Thrones actor Jack Hickey.
However, Quinn revealed he probably would not go see the movie himself. "I was there in the room and don't need to be told what happened by someone who wasn't," he said.
Based on an original script by Paul Fraser, Saipan was directed by filmmakers Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn.
Alongside Hardwicke and Coogan, the movie stars Bridgerton actor Harriet Cains, Derry Girls' Jamie Beamish, and Peter McDonald, among others.
The film was co-produced by Trevor Birney and Oliver Butler for Fine Point Films (Kneecap, No Stone Unturned) and Macdara Kelleher and John Keville for Wild Atlantic Pictures (Evil Dead Rise, Cocaine Bear).
Saipan will come to Irish cinemas soon, with a definite date yet to be announced.
