Track of the Day: Adam Garrett – 'Don't Keep Up'
Producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Adam Garrett turns over a new leaf with 'Don't Keep Up'
The latest andfriends Records signee to release music on the fledgling indie label is Adam Garrett. You can usually find Garrett producing work for Nealo and playing in other bands, but 'Don't Keep Up' marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the multi-instrumentalist.
Blending funk and electronic in the guitar-forward track, Garrett has produced a stunning offering, filled with infectious raw energy. Some of the best tunes have a mismatch between lyrical and sonic qualities, and 'Don't Keep Up' is no exception. Lyrically, it's about attempting to understand and come to terms with difficult parts of yourself.
"The song was the first one I started writing for this project. It has gone through a lot of changes compared to its original form – and actually helped shape the tracks that came after – so I thought it had to be the one I whack out first," Garrett explains. "Fiachra Kinder put down drums early in the recording stages which helped shape and solidify the groove – it’s much tighter now I think. Lyrically, the EP mainly focuses on one particular night I had ages ago – grabbing snippets of strange chats or moments."
