The sun is back out (for the moment) and we've just welcomed Dublin's own Sleep Thieves for the first Hot Press Speakeasy interview of the day.
The trio joined host Craig Fitzpatrick to talk about all of their recent success in the wake of the release of last year's You Want The Night.
The album was released on renowned label Minty Fresh and Sorcha Brennan quipped that, "You have to have a girlfriend to get a girlfriend. When you have a release on such a well known label much more people are talking about you, it creates way more opportunities".
This year the group will be hitting plenty of festivals on their home soil and heading abroad for a couple of big dates in France and Italy.
As it turns out Spotify, while it doesn't play the bills, is a platform that the band credit with spreading the word about their music and admitted that it has helped them to tour internationally.
Asked if, like their contemporaries in Le Galaxie, they had felt the need to visit the US while recording to do justice to their cinematic, disco-noir sound the band replied, “No, we recorded it in Wexford and Cabra!” The band’s sound is heavily influenced by cinema though and they told us, “we talk about films all the time and for this album it was all about creating the right atmosphere. Rather than giving technical directions to our producer we would say things like, ‘we want this vocal to sound like you’re shouting off the edge of a cliff into the abyss.”
When asked about the recent Marriage Referendeum they recalled fondly a weekend that was “a three day blur. We were rehearsing on Dame Lane and emerged into a new Ireland.”
The group promised that today’s set at 4pm on the Live Live Stage would feature two brand new songs and said that, “It’ll be great to gauge the crowd reaction ahead of recording them.”
