Last Days Of Death Country win the Battle For Bob

The Limerick outfit will be supporting Dylan in Limerick on July 4

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 28 Jun 2010

The Battle For Bob at Dolan’s Warehouse last Friday ended in victory for the Last Days Of Death Country who’ll be kicking things off at 2.30pm on July 4 when His Bobness plays Thomond Park.

Over 40 bands entered the competition, with the top 5 then getting to record a Dylan cover, which was aired on Limerick’s Live 95.

Dolan’s found them all reverting to their own material and trying to impress a judging panel that included well-known local DJ Mike Knightson, Live 95's Alan Jacques, the Limerick Leader’s Alan Owens, the Limerick Post’s Eric Fitzgerald and Hot Press’ Stuart Clark.

It was an all killer, no filler affair with the disgustingly young, but choc-full of tunes Animal Beats; the beautifully mellow, strings-driven Nick Carswell & The Elective Orchestra; the epic chorus-toting Brendan Markham; and new post rockers on the block Windings all giving it socks in front of their hometown fans.

After some measured debate – actually, they argued like a bunch of 12-year-old girls picking their favourite Jonas brother – the judges plumped for the Death Country boys who’ve just released their Mode And Effect EP.

The four-tracker was produced by Fergal Lawlor who was there with fellow Cranberry Noel Hogan and delighted that his charges had won. They were also raving about Windings who opened for The Cranberries on Tuesday when they played Cork Live At The Marquee.

Returning to Thomond Park, and the other stage times are:

3.30pm – Alabama 3

4.30pm – Seasick Steve

5.45pm – David Gray

8pm – Bob Dylan
