In a LEAGUE of their OWN! While fashion and technology evolve, a perfect pop hook is essentially immortal. The trio of Philip Oakey, Joanne Catherall, and Susan Ann Sulley, better known as The Human League delivered a masterclass in synth-pop nostalgia to open the Dolans LIVE 2026 Live at the Castle Summer Series on Saturday night in Limerick. In a surreal rain soaked atmosphere the 1980s Sheffield group turned back the years as synth-pop and new wave sound echoed off 13th-century limestone walls.
The venue remains one of Ireland’s most evocative gems. Nestled on the banks of the River Shannon, the castle courtyard provided a dramatic, enclosed "room" for the evening. The battlements were bathed in neon pinks and icy blues, creating a visual bridge between the medieval and the digital.
Renowned Irish band Cry Before Dawn opened the night, their Celtic-infused rock providing an atmospheric warm-up that resonated well with the early crowd.
Standing the test of time The Human League performance was outstanding. Phil Oakey remains a singular frontman. Dressed in his signature avant-garde style, his baritone was as steady and commanding as it was forty-five years ago. Flanked by Catherall and Sulley—who went through a series of sleek, synchronized costume changes—the band struck the perfect balance between high-concept art and high-energy pop.
