Kingfishr Launch Virgin Media Park Summer Music Series with a BANG! How better to kick off Cork’s summer concert series than with a band spearheading the current Irish indie-folk revival? Taking the stage for the first of two back-to-back sold-out nights, Limerick trio Kingfishr proved exactly why they’ve transitioned from intimate venue openers to stadium-ready headliners.
The atmosphere in the park was electric despite a nippy June evening, fueled earlier by Dublin openers The Scratch, whose chaotic, brilliant fusion of traditional acoustic instrumentation, rap, and heavy metal laid down the perfect gauntlet.
When Kingfishr walked out just before 9:00 PM, the roar from the crowd was deafening. Frontman Eddie Keogh looked out over the sea of thousands and mused on their dizzying rise: "We were here three years ago as support, and now we’re getting to do two nights like this. What is going on, Cork!?"
What makes Kingfishr so compelling live is the interplay between sheer, cinematic scale and deep-rooted nostalgia. They launched straight into heavy hitters like Shadow and Hold Me Down, before treating the crowd to Flowers-Fire—the very first song they ever recorded.
Eddie Keogh’s powerful, commanding baritone grounded the night. He sang with a raw emotional intensity that felt like it was tearing right through him, frequently leaving him visibly moved by the crowd singing his lyrics back to him. Eoghan "McGoo" McGrath’s banjo work was mechanically flawless. His intricate, trickling riffs on tracks like Gloria and Eyes Don't Lie kept the band’s commercial pop-indie hooks deeply tied to a traditional Irish pulse, backed beautifully by Eoin "Fitz" Fitzgibbon's driving rhythm guitar.
The crowd completely lost its collective mind during Killeagh. Originally written as a favor for a local Junior hurling team, the track has evolved into a massive cultural anthem. The crowd’s roar during the chorus threatened to rival the decibel levels of a jet engine.
