Jesse Sludds Proves He Belongs on the Big Stage at Thomond Park! When 19-year-old Wexford native Jesse Sludds won The Late Late Show’s "Opening Act" competition back in April, he openly admitted to the nation that he almost didn't enter because he "didn't think he was country enough." Last night, stepping out onto the massive pitch of Limerick's Thomond Park ahead of pop-country royalty Shania Twain, Sludds didn't just ease those doubts—he completely shattered them.
Opening a stadium gig in broad daylight while the crowd is still trickling past security is one of the toughest gigs in music. Yet, armed with just an acoustic guitar, his signature genre-blending vocal style, and a photo of his grandad tucked safely into his pocket, Sludds commanded the arena like a seasoned touring pro.
The transition from a cozy RTÉ television studio to a 25,000-capacity rugby stadium would give anyone whiplash, but Sludds leaned heavily into the raw, storytelling intimacy that won him the public vote in the first place.
His vocals were remarkably grounded, carrying a grit and emotional maturity that belied his 19 years, for sure there were nerves but these were quickly banished when the early-arriving Limerick crowd gave him his first true stadium-sized roar.
What makes Sludds stand out is exactly what made him second-guess himself initially: he isn't a traditional, cookie-cutter country artist. His sound sits at a contemporary crossroads where raw folk storytelling meets modern country-pop. He bridges the gap perfectly for an audience that grew up listening to both Luke Combs and Dermot Kennedy.
By the time he wrapped up his short but impactful set, passing the baton to pop icon Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Thomond Park was firmly on his side. It’s a massive summer launchpad for the young Wexford musician, who is also booked for The Late Late Show Country Music Special later this year. If last night was any indication, the pubs of Enniscorthy won't be seeing him back on a regular basis for much longer; Jesse Sludds is built for a much bigger stage.
