50th anniversary of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' celebrated with a new music video
'Space Oddity' revisited
David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' came out on July 11, 1969, fittingly just a few days before the moon landing happened. Celebrating the song's (and the historic event's) 50th anniversary this year, a new music video was released.
The video features previously unreleased footage of Bowie performing on his 50th birthday at Madison Square Garden in 1997 as well as clips from 1990's Sound & Vision Tour. According to the Rolling Stone, the Tim Pope directed visuals were first shown at a NASA event in Washington, D.C. on Saturday to commemorate the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Back then, 'Space Oddity' accompanied BBC's coverage of the historic event. In an interview with Bill DeMain in 2003, Bowie spoke out about the confusing usage of the song: "I'm sure they really weren't listening to the lyrics at all. It wasn't a pleasant thing to juxtapose against a moon landing."
Mattel previously announced that they are producing a Barbie doll created after Bowie's famous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
