Album Review: Wolf Parade – 'Thin Mind'
Canadian indie heroes still as hungry as ever
Wolf Parade’s fifth album is the perfect sonic tonic for these troubling times. Now trimmed down to a power trio, they might have lost a member since last we saw them, but they definitely don’t lack anything in the hooks department – this opus is heaving with earworms. Something of a rallying cry against our reliance on tech, Thin Mind is a short, sharp shock to the senses. You’ll be whistling its tunes all year.
Cerebral, seriously catchy and filled with synth-bothering rump shakers, the likes of galloping opener ‘Under Glass’ and the toxic masculinity-tackling, disco-flecked ‘Julia Take Your Man Home’ – a sort of millennial update of ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?' – are instant classics. Elsewhere, Bowie and Bauhaus influences are mined on ‘Out Of Control’ and ‘Fall Into The Future’, while ‘Against The Day’ is destined to be a set staple for years. Boasting duelling vocals, and telling a tale about blood-suckers exploring the modern world (that’d be vampires, not Brexiteers), you can just imagine the Frog Brothers’ blasting this ice cool, throbbing alt-ballad in their comic shop in Santa Carla.
8/10
