Album Review: Nova Twins, Supernova
Hotly tipped UK duo deliver the goods.
A product of Nova Twins’ rebellious dynamic, Supernova is infused with imaginative colour and exhilarating punk energy.
In keeping with the space-themed album sleeve, powerful opener ‘Power’ goes fully interstellar. ‘Antagonist’ establishes a genre-bending sound from the jump, fusing its verses with programmed drums and a layered grime sound, twisting the bridge with an R&B groove.
Driven by a horrorcore style of taunting rap-roc, ‘K.M.B’ has all the makings of a cult anthem.
Throughout the album, the lyrics straddle the line between reality and nightmarish fantasy – an impressive stylistic feat. The sound is off-kilter and Amy Love’s vocals purposely sour, making for a deliciously idiosyncratic mix.
And they‘re determined to make people listen, as they make clear on ‘Enemy’: “We are here, don’t need permission.” A thrilling exercise in abrasive rock, Supernova is definitely a metallic KO.
