Album Review: Drew Makes Noise, Let The Whole Tape Run
Rising star soars to new heights.
First leaping to fame and acclaim as a member of Gary Lightbody-endorsed electro-rockers Ed Zealous, Andrew Wilson – a musical Swiss Army Knife if ever there was one – was reborn as Drew Makes Noise in 2020. Over the last few years, he has evolved into one of the North’s most arresting acts, a trajectory that continues with this intriguing debut.
Eclectic, exhilarating and allergic to pigeonholes, Drew’s LP is a veritable smorgasbord of sounds, variously flirting with indie, folk, psych and hip-hop. At times beautiful (‘Tie Me To The Moon’), at others bullish (‘Something To Kill’ calls to mind Jello Biafra), it’s an impeccably produced album that’s playful and potent.
The Beach Boys-esque ‘This Matter’ could be a chart-breaker in the making, while the tasty ‘Lemonade’ serves as a welcome reminder of Wilson’s former life making indie anthems. Lovers of the Flaming Lips and Sparklehorse will adore Drew’s noise.
Listen: ‘This Matter’
Score: 7/10
The new issue of Hot Press is out now.
