Album review: We Cut Corners' Impostors

Album number four from this insanely talented, pigeonhole-shunning twosome from Dublin could serve as a soundtrack to the most absorbing fever dream you've ever had. The product of two years' worth of hard graft, Impostors is rich with ideas and melodies, performed by a (quite rightly) critically lauded band, who you feel have only just begun to reach the peak of their powers. Guitarist/vocalist John Duignan and drummer/vocalist Conall Ó Breachain set sail for pastures new over the course of 11 tracks, taking listeners on a trip you'll never forget.

At times hushed and haunting (sci-fi lullaby 'Impostors'), at others expressive and expansive ('Ten Sentences'), the album is consistently compelling. -Eke- - an inspired mix of Merseybeat and garage rock - is a standout, as is the hypnotic 'Rainy Night In Slomo', which calls to mind a (much) mellower Drive Like Jehu. Lyrically, meanwhile, We Cut Corners are as weighty as ever. Lines like "Do I look lost?/ Like a cartoon Christ upon the cross?/ Crying because all of his friends just watch?" ('The Specialist') are some of the sharpest you'll hear this year. Impostors? These guys are anything but...
