Micky Finn & Aphrodite Present: The Takeover Bid (Mixmag Live)

Worldwide handbag domination plans temporarily left aside, Mixmag Live takes a rather brave sideways move to serve up a double mix from the kings of jump-up jungle, Finn & Aphrodite. The big surprise here is that Finn’s set isn’t full of the daft bass excesses and drum-rolls you might have expected. Prefering to take a trip through the V and Jonny L back catalogue, his set is full of menacing recent classics, including Grooverider’s mix of L’s ‘Piper’, Krust’s ‘Warhead’ and Ed Rush & Optical’s ‘Funktion’. On the other hand, if you want some manic pop thrills, then head for the Aphrodite contribution. Stuffed full of his own work and suitably ample hip-hop breaks and big rolls, he also finds time to drop an unreleased well-messed-with mix of Prodigy’s ‘Funky Shit’. Pure, unadulterated fun. (RB)
