The Holy Roman Army and The Cast Of Cheers, live at The Bleeding Horse
The winners' moody electronica veers from smooth to spiky, while still always retaining an atmospheric groove
Tonight’s Our Thursday’s victors have a potentially disastrous set-up. Synthesisers, guitar and trumpet don’t exactly scream headliner, but The Holy Roman Army are making a marvellous commotion with their slightly haphazard selection of tools. Their suitably moody electronica veers from smooth to spiky, while still always retaining an atmospheric groove. Thumping drum beats reel behind Laura Coffey’s sugary sweet vocals while her brother Chris’s muffled croon peeks out happily from behind a myriad of spellbinding hoots and bleeps.
Later, Dublin’s finest spasm rockers The Cast Of Cheers go high octane with some feverishly good tunes, including a new work-in-progress song from their forthcoming second album, which shows the foursome’s funkiest side yet. Kevin Curran’s frenzied drums and Conor Adams’ fancy pedal work in particular are going down a treat with a sweaty mob of devotees, and the robot rock is especially free flowing as live favourite ‘Auricom’ becomes a swirling nine-minute epic. Ditto ‘I Am Lion’, which ends the night with a sprawling, multi-layered flourish.
