Kirk Degiorgio: Synthesis (X:Treme)
One look at Kirk’s ‘Out of Your Box’ chart will prove that his tastes and musical education span decades and not just genres, and should warn off any techno’spotter looking for 90 minutes’ worth of glacial Detroit techno in the mix. This man may have graced those areas once, but Synthesis is a project that allow Degiorgio to show off his entire musical history. One minute it’s the future house of Maas, Moodymann and Common Factor, then all of a sudden it’s into the pure experimentia of boffin territory with Sun Ra and Herbie Hancock before making a slight reprise with his own melancholy, quirky mixes of Arc and Frankie The Prankster. Not exactly dancefloor slaying gear, but hey, it’s a jazz thing, and at some stage you’ll understand. (RB)
