Japanese producer Calm is a relatively unknown quantity in the UK and Ireland, but he’s a highly rated producer practically everywhere else. After all, Calm has released material on Compost, Yellow, Ubiquity and Wave as well as remixing the likes of Femi Kuti. Shadow is his debut European release, and it’s easy to understand why everyone from Francois K to Jazzanova are queuing up to collaborate with him. Coming on like an Oriental version of John Beltran, Kinobe and Kirk Degiorgio and augmented by warm, rumbling basslines, ethnic style percussion and irresistible piano lines, Shadow is this year’s sublimely chilled out summer sound. When it’s time to lie down and be counted, Calm is the cool soundtrack you should have on your stereo.
