SUPERCHARGER
Saturday Night Special (Indochina)
“Make it fucked up!” is their new call – Supercharger, the breakbeat terrorists from Leeds, are back with a vengeance. The hip-hop and dub rhythms are still on show, but the punk influence is more noticeable than ever, not least on the rousing cover of Lydon’s classic, ‘Public Image’. Saturday Night Special sees Supercharger move closer to rock than dance, though exceptions like the beat-heavy blitz of ‘Tick Like A Bomb’, which features NSO Force, show they can still rock the block. It’s at times a confusing album that doesn’t seem to know where it wants to go, but in another light that might be deemed adventurous and genre-busting. I need a few more listens to really tell if it fucks things up, or if it’s just fucked up. (MK)
