Rose Tattoo frontman Gary 'Angry' Anderson dies aged 79

Gary 'Angry' Anderson, frontman of the band Rose Tattoo has died aged 79. The singer passed away at his home in Australia on Monday, September 21.

His death was announced in a statement released by Rose Tattoo on Instagram;

"It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gary ‘Angry’ Anderson on the eve of Monday 21 September 2026, surrounded by his loved ones here in Australia.

"Angry was a devoted father, and much-loved member of his friends, bandmates and the wider music and entertainment community.

"His loss will be deeply felt by all those who knew and loved him both here in Australia and overseas."

"We thank everyone for their prayers and messages of love and continued support.

"With love, The Anderson family and Rose Tattoo Band. Stay young, grow strong."

He was admitted to hospital in Germany in August, where the band was performing for their 50th anniversary tour. A concert scheduled for August 9 was cancelled, the following day the group announced they were unable to continue the European leg of the tour.

Rose Tattoo performed at the first Slane Castle concert in 1981, alongside U2 and Thin Lizzy.

Formed in 1976 in Sydney, they have released eight records over the course of their career. Their most recent album Outlaw, was released in 2020.

Anderson remained the sole consistent member of the band until his death. The rock band were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame in 2006.
