Hellbent on ‘bringing science to the Picnic’, BATS are also beginning to experiment with pop songs.
“I don’t know – maybe perform some experiments live on stage!”
Playing in a band that's inspired by all things true and scientifically proven can pose difficulties when there are major unforeseen advancements, as BATS experienced following proof of the Higgs Boson, often referred to as the God particle, in CERN a couple of months ago. BATS have an ode to the previously-assumed-but-never-proven-until-now particle on their last album, so are a few tweaks in the lyrics in order, just to ensure things remain scientifically correct?
“Yeah,” affirms Morris, “we will have to update it! Unfortunately the new album was recorded before they discovered the Higgs. I’d have liked to have written a new song about it or updated the existing one. We were thinking about actually playing that song at the Picnic and changing the lyrics.”
Although Morris is anxious for everyone to hear the new album, its release is tinged with sadness, as it will be the last on independent record label Richter Collective.
Was the BATS man surprised at the news that the label, which had seemed to be producing a constant flow of interesting and creative artists, was shutting up shop?
“I was and I wasn’t,” he admits with disappointment. “I thought the guys were doing well. Then again I wasn’t surprised because for independent labels these days it’s just so hard to do anything because people aren’t buying records. On top of that, they specialised in alternative music. It’s just so sad that having really good bands isn’t enough to be able to support yourself.”
BATS are now in search of a new label.
“We’ve been talking to some people whose identity we won’t reveal. Fingers crossed something will come together.”
They will play at the Richter Collective’s Farewell Party in the Button Factory this December.
“We owe the guys a lot. They’ve been really, really good to us over the years. They supported us, and they’ve done an amazing job of backing independent and alternative music. So it’ll be nice to have a big blow-out!”
Sleep Of Reason is out in October.
