Promised Lands
Languid comeback from forgotten but not gone post-shoegazers
You may not recall, but in the dim and distant early years of this decade, St Albans country rock foursome Lowgold were being loudly heralded as the future. But their mellow folk pop never quite chimed – people were too busy at the time spoiling their trousers over The Strokes. Refusing to be derailed by public apathy, the quartet has slogged stubbornly on and have now issued their fourth album, a record that, in every way, feels like a faithful facsimile of everything they have done before. Influence-wise, they are still proudly indebted to Neil Young circa Harvest – though the occasionally fuzzy drone-out suggests they are hoping to profit from the imminent shoe-gaze revival. We advise them not to hold their breath – Promised Lands is very pretty but about as substantial as low-lying fog.
Key Track: ‘Clear’
