Pink
With so many wannabe divas moving up the ranks, has Pink got what it takes to shake off the Britney-with-balls tag and prove her reputation as the riot girl of corporate pop? Well, yes.
The slogan on her T-shirt reads “Don’t Bite Me” but the punka-pop princess flexing her biceps in front of an awe-struck crowd has already left an indelible mark on the nation’s consciousness with the riotous, rock-lite rhythms of ‘Get The Party Started’. Question is, with so many wannabe divas moving up the ranks, has Pink got what it takes to shake off the Britney-with-balls tag and prove her reputation as the riot girl of corporate pop?
Well, yes. But if we wanna party with the bling-bling, booty-shaking Pink we must also be prepared to listen to the private, low-key confessionals of poor-little-me Pink whose Missundazstood LP was, in parts, a statement of self-loathing.
Animating every song with her trashy, street-kid-cool antics and gorgeous, throaty vocals, she breezes through the bittersweet downer of ‘Just Like A Pill’ and the rap-funk freakout of album title track ‘Missundazstood’ before leaving us on a high with the buzz-pop bounce of ‘Don’t Let Me Get Me’. With a backing band who resemble Fleetwood Mac and sound like an ’80s poodle-perm covers band, it’s up to the lady in Pink to entertain and she does so by effortlessly shifting between pop, rock, r’n’b and funk, never skipping a beat.
Flashing the devil horn as she leaves the stage, Pink confirms what we always suspected. She may sound a little like Britney, but don’t misunderstand – she knows how to rock.
