Nothing - Guilty Of Everything
Philadelphia outfit guilty of self-indulgence
Tipped by some rock mags as a group to take note of, Philadelphia’s Nothing have been making music since 2011 and after releasing a brace of interesting, nu-gaze flavoured EPs, have unveiled their debut full-length Guilty Of Everything. Moody, melancholic, often meandering, the record suffers from a lack of focus and certainly isn’t worth the wait. Tracks like the fevered ‘Somersault’ don’t really have any direction and while the ambient vocals and distorted yet melodic guitars conjure up some interesting sound-scapes on occasion (the juxtaposition of up tempo drums and laconic melodies on ‘Get Well’ is an arresting fusion), for the most part the album amounts to nothing more than background music and very rarely engages. Fans of Forget Cassettes, Dinosaur Jr and some of the Smashing Pumpkins’ more overblown moments will enjoy ‘Dig’ and the title-track while the fuzz-laden riffs of ‘Hymn To The Pillory’ and ‘B&E’ are oddly soothing. Ultimately Guilty Of Everything doesn’t really warrant the hype.
