Mitski to write music for stage adaptation of The Queen's Gambit
Mitski is set to write the lyrics and arrangements for a stage adaptation of The Queen's Gambit, produced by Level Forward.
American singer-songwriter Mitski has been confirmed to write the lyrics and music for an upcoming musical stage production of The Queen’s Gambit, the 1983 Walter Tevis novel that was recently adapted into a popular Netflix show.
The stage adaptation, which was first announced in 2021, was announced to be moving forward in its production by producers Level Forward in a social media today, which detailed Mitski's role in the musical. Playwright Eboni Booth (Primary Trust) is set to write the play, whilst Obie Award-winner Whitney White (Jaja’s African Hair Braiding) is set to direct the stage adaptation. The stage play has yet to receive a debut date, but is currently in its production stages, with a cast not yet announced.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter regarding her involvement in the play, Mitski said: “Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen’s Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel. So I was already determined to be a member of this team.”
“And then I met Eboni and Whitney, and my determination grew tenfold! She continued. "I absolutely had to be a part of this! I am ecstatic to get to work with all of these amazing creatives, who’ve each built beautiful and unique repertoires of their own.”
The Queen’s Gambit tells the story of Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy in the Netflix series) who becomes a chess prodigy. It charts her journey from growing up in an orphanage to her stratospheric rise as a world-class chess player, abusing prescription drugs as a means to boost her game strategy.
