The Mary Stokes Band release a new take on Bessie Smith Christmas classic
Christmas comes just once a year. No better time than to release a brand new version of an old Bessie Smith classic, with Liam Ó Maonlaí guesting on piano.
Fresh from their rip-roaring live success at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, The Mary Stokes Band have released a brand-new Christmas single, 'At The Christmas Ball’. The single is a fresh cover of an old Bessie Smith song from the 1920s.
The song was written by Butch Thompson and F. W. Longshaw and originally recorded by Bessie on 18 November, 1925.
In collaboration with sensational Irish guitarist Sarah Michelle, along with Brian Palm on harmonica, Mary Stokes has rearranged Bessie’s song, with Sean Connellan adding bass and the legendary Liam O’Maonlai guesting on piano.
The song was recorded in Displace Studio, with additional recording by Joe McGrath in Loscann Studios. Production is by Stano, with final mastering by Joe Chester.
The single is available through CD Baby and on hearnow.com.
