John Mayer releases new single 'Tom and Jerry'

American singer-songwriter John Mayer has released a new single 'Tom and Jerry', marking his first new solo release in five years.

"'Tom and Jerry' was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea," said Mayer. "'And if you ever come through, which I doubt you'll do, I'll run away with you'. From that moment on, the adventure began in bringing that feeling to life."

Mayer confirmed earlier this year he was working on a new album, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "I'm working on the studio, I'm working on that record, and, purposely, my tide has recessed a little bit from the world.

"I'm investing all my time and energy into making a record so that when I come back out, I'll have something to really present the world."

The news comes alongside the launch of his own record label, Sob Rock Records, in partnership with Mercury Records.

The Grammy award-winning artist has earned three No. 1 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with his album Heavier Things in 2003, Battle Studies in 2009 and Born and Raised in 2012.

Over his career, he has garnered seven Grammy awards, including Song of the Year for 'Daughters', Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for 'Your Body Is a Wonderland' and more.

Mayer formed rock band Dead & Company in 2015, performing as lead guitarist and contributing vocals. The group saw several tours - including a 48 show residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, which drew nearly half a million attendees.

In 2021, Sob Rock, Mayer's eighth studio album, was released, featuring hits 'Last Train Home' and 'Wild Blue'. The album has since been certified gold.
