I Look To You
Houston, We’ve got problems
Let’s cut to the chase shall we? Whitney Houston’s voice is not in a good state. There’s no denying it. Her years of drug abuse have seemingly robbed her of her unique talents and even the top drawer knob-twiddling on her comeback record I Look To You fails to disguise her wheezing and at times unintelligible vocals. It’s not a total disaster, mind. At least some of the material is upbeat (‘Million Dollar Bill’, ‘Nothin’ But Love’) and she doesn’t rely on the maudlin ballad schtick to the degree that some of her peers do. However, her frankly ghoulish live performance on The X Factor recently coupled with her inability to hit the notes the way she used to leaves us in no doubt that this diva has had her day.
