Gulp 'Season Son' - Album Review
Pleasant yet forgettable Super Furry Animals side-project
Gulp is SFA guitarist Guto Pryce, abetted by partner Lindsey Leven. Where Super Furries singer Gruff Rhys has tended, with his solo records, to distance himself from the group’s pastoral psychedelia, Pryce is happy to double down on the formula, with results that are mostly slight and occasionally lovely.
The brisk, carefree lilt of Leven’s delivery is the most likable thing about the Bell and Sebastian-esque ‘Let’s Grow’; on ‘Vast Space’ a stomping bassline and twitchy organ solo introduce a note of welcome urgency. An LP that tends to float by, with little to hold onto, you’ll have trouble recalling much of Season Sun after one listen. But the journey is enjoyable – like one of those hazy summer days that lives on in half-recollected memories.
