Geordie Greep cancels shows after accusations of sexual misconduct
Greep denied the allegations, saying that what had happened was a misunderstanding he had apologised for.
Geordie Greep has cancelled five shows across the US; in Boise, Salt Lake City, Boulder, Denver, and Omaha. This follows allegations that the former Black Midi frontman committed sexual assault.
Greep denied the claims after someone at his October 8 show in Vancouver passed out flyers reading; "Let him know what Vancouver thinks of rapists".
He came onstage late and without his backing band to defend himself.
“So essentially what happened last night, me and some of the band, we went out [...] and ended up in a situation where, really late at a house party, I got the wrong end of the stick with someone that was there, and I made a move, and it didn’t come off and I really quickly, of course, apologised”, he said.
“It was a complete misunderstanding on my part [...] and I feel extremely sorry, and am extremely upset about the whole situation. I would never rape a woman. I’m not a rapist. It’s not how that went down”.
Greep explained that he did not want to force his band to play as the controversy unfolded, and that he understood if fans wanted refunds or left. The crowd's response was reported as divided, with some fans listening and later cheering for the musician as he played his set solo, while others walked out as he was speaking.
Fans are being refunded for the cancelled shows. Greep also pledged to donate proceeds earned from the Vancouver show to a local charity combatting violence against women. An official statement has not been issued.
One show in Des Moines on Thursday is still going forward, as are his November dates in Europe, including Madrid and Marseille.
