DJ Morpheus Presents: Freezone 5: The Radio Is Teaching My Goldfish Ju-Jitsu (Crammed/SSR)
The fifth instalment in the Freezone series sees Morpheus bring the listener further down the experimental path sidestepped by most producers. Traditionally uptempo househeads like Ibbotson and Yost go all weird and downtempo, Planet E’s Recloose parades his jazz-breaks wares, and there’s some fine instrumental hip-hop from Rawkus affiliates Shawn J Period and Ge-Ology. However, it’s when things go all deep that the real jewels here shine. Be it techno, drum’n’bass, hip-hop or downbeat, killers from Eddie Fowlkes, Klute, Rae & Christian – this time with an amazing remake of YBU’s ‘Soul Magic’ – and Phosphorus, The Tenants and B.Low, all have that certain je ne sais quoi edge that makes dance music so exciting in the first place.
