EAST OF EDEN
EASTERN PROMISE FROM BREATHY SWEDE SONGSTRESS
Taken By Trees is the moniker under which breathy Swedish singer-songwriter Victoria Bergsman – previously best-known for her work with The Concretes and as the distinctive voice from Peter Bjorn and John’s worldwide smash hit ‘Young Folks’ – is currently operating.
Recorded with local musicians in sunny Pakistan, her second solo album is a somewhat mystical and eastern sounding affair and is markedly different from her 2007 debut, Open Field. Although it features nine songs, the whole thing clocks in at just over 30 minutes. With enchanting chanting, eerie wind instruments, inventive percussion (most especially on the hand-tapped ‘Day By Day’) and hypnotising vocals, Bergsman manages to conjure up an exotic mood while still sounding like a sultry western pop star.
