Dublin Calling [Rock all]
As the great JJ72 ‘turning their back on Ireland’ debate raged earlier this year, perhaps the most important question of all was being missed – just why did such an obvious talent feel the need to head over the water to get discovered?
For some time now the Rock School in Ballyfermot has been seeking to reverse the tide by giving local artists an opportunity to develop and achieve a platform. Dublin Calling offers an insight into the bands and artists currently trying to make a name for themselves in the capital. Of the five bands included, two leap out – Thekeds contribute two tracks of spirited punk pop, hugely influenced by the likes of Green Day but impressive nonetheless. Ark demonstrate an encouraging willingness to attempt the epic and dramatic, falling short but at least trying to avoid the usual garage band clichés. The Freaksters sound like the perfect Saturday night party band, while After The Party fit nicely into that well worn Irish rock sound. While nothing hear sends a shiver up the spine, the important thing is the opportunities being offered and for that the Rock School deserve our respect.
