Dislocated Genius

Electronic music needs larger-than-life characters like Chleonis Jones, the American singer/poet/producer who decamped to Berlin and hooked up with the Get Physical label. The label’s visceral funk is evident on ‘Blackface’ and ‘Middle Finger Music’, and provides a backing for his Dave Gahan-influenced acronym rap, Kraftwerkian chords and his Prince-style falsettos respectively. Jones’ vocal range – from indie drone on ‘Vultures’ to soulful melancholia on ‘Deer In The Headlights' – and his assimilation of everything from Chicago house and '80s pop make this a contender for 2005’s big dance crossover album.
