Dinosaur Jr. has announced the release of their new album, There Near, for August 28 via Jagjaguwar.
Accompanying the announcement is the release of the lead single ‘Several Got Away’, written by guitarist and lead singer J Mascis.
“I'm not always sure what a song is 'about' when I'm writing it,” Mascis said. "I guess the meaning will present itself at some point. I'll use whatever words work. And a lot of it will be influenced by whatever esoteric mumbo jumbo I'm reading at the time.
“I try not to think too hard about any of it. I think it's a drag that Spotify shows all the lyrics to a song. What's the fun of that?"
The release of the single is accompanied by a music video directed by Brooklyn-based filmmaker and director Guy Kozak.
“I wanted to do something a little tongue-in-cheek with a kind of ‘backyard movie’ feel that could fit in nicely with the existing canon of Dinosaur Jr. music videos. The first bit of inspiration came from a great Henry Darger painting of kids being terrorized by two giant floating hands of fire.
“Then I got thinking about the rapture and it came together from there. The guys were really game for it all and I was honored that they let me chase them around a big field with my camera like a psycho.”
The release will mark the American rock band’s 13th studio album following the release of Sweep It Into Space in 2021.
Formed in Massachusetts in 1984, Dino Jr. are best known for their 1994 album Without a Sound, which achieved their highest mainstream success, peaking at No. 44 on the Billboard 200.
The band have also been credited with heavily influencing the 90s grunge and alternative scenes. Kurt Cobain was a huge fan, famously citing them as a massive inspiration and asking J Mascis to join Nirvana, first in 1989 and again in 1990.
