Champ
Pleasant but ineffectual second outing from Canadian indie foursome
Tokyo Police Club do a sweet line in post-Strokes jangle rock. Still, there's something almost unnervingly underwhelming about the Newmarket, Ontario quartet's second album, a collection of skittishly melodic workouts that, no matter how much attention you give them, refuse to take up residence in your cranium. The strident 'Wait Up (Boots of Danger)' slices through the fug and 'End of A Spark' is a decent lurch at '90s style college rock (a genre that must feel antediluvian to a band with an average age of 22). For the most part, however, Champ recycles a bunch of over-familiar ideas – not even the 'please like me' yelp of frontman Dave Monks will convince you to stick around for multiple helpings.
