Bagatelle to be honoured by Bray County Council this Sunday

Legendary Irish band Bagatelle are to be honoured in their hometown of Bray this Sunday September 7 at 4pm. A commemorative bench is set to be unveiled honouring the band's contribution to the Irish music sphere.

The project which was driven by founding member and bassist Ken Doyle, finally received the go-ahead back in 2023.

Following the deaths of guitarist John O'Brien on April 26, 2019 and lead singer Liam Reilly on January 1, 2021 the bench will be a place for fans and locals alike to not only enjoy the stunning views of Bray Head but to also celebrate the band's legacy.

Founded in 1978, Bagatelle are often described as paving the way for other Irish bands such as U2.  

Bagatelle achieved several No.1 singles with iconic songs like ‘Summer in Dublin’, ‘Second Violin’ and ‘Trump Card’.  They also have enjoyed multi-platinum and gold album sales with classic emigration songs like ‘Streets of New York’, ‘Flight of the Earls’ and ‘Boston Rose’, all written by front man Liam Reilly.

After the death of lead singer Liam Reilly, TG4 aired a tribute documentary about his life. Bagatelle - Ómos do Liam Reilly, first aired New Years Eve 2021, a year after Liam's untimely passing. The remaining members of the band then decided to go back on the road to celebrate the life of Liam Reilly, his music and the Bagatelle legacy.

The unveiling of the bench will be officially carried out by Cathaoirleach of Bray Municipal District Erika Doyle. The ceremony will be followed by Bagatelle and Friends playing in the Bandstand on Bray Seafront, with Katie Cloke set to open the stage.

The event will also host a special visit from a 46A bus, a nod to their most famous hit ‘Summer in Dublin’.
