Album Review: The Deadlians, Rid The Land Of Greedy Toads
Thrilling re-release rages against the machine. 8/10
Originally unveiled in the summer of 2024, the most recent album from Dublin crew The Deadlians receives a re-release this month, courtesy of Irish music loving Peckham label Dimple Discs. Inspired by our past, but not shackled by it, Rid The Land Of Greedy Toads is a thrill-ride infused with trad, alt folk, psych, punk and a wee pinch of proto-metal.
With the band led by renaissance man Sean Fitzgerald, whose charismatic and passionate performances call to mind Johnny Rotten before he lost the run of himself, the LP comes close to capturing the power and gleeful chaos of The Deadlians' live performances. The Clash and Horslips-spiced ‘Prince Fingallian’ is royally good, while Americana-laced ballad ‘Cheeky Monkey’ is a show-stopper. ‘Jaws’, meanwhile, is the best moment – driven by soaring guitars and molar-rattling drums, fans of Irish metal heroes Primordial will love it.
Inventive and uncompromising, Rid The Land... richly deserves its second outing.
