Adele Admits a Battle with Depression
From Bruce Springsteen to Demi Levato, a surge of celebrities are opening up to share their mental health struggles
The 28-year old powerhouse singer, Adele, recently shared her postpartum depression story during an interview with Vanity Fair. After her son Angelo was born in 2012, she suffered from an overwhelming case of depression.
Postpartum depression usually causes women to not want to be with their child. They may worry that they'd harm the baby or do something wrong. There is no cookie-cutter definition for the illness because not all mothers go through the same feelings of anxiety and guilt. For Adele, she felt obsessed with Angelo. An hour away from him caused her great anxiety.
Unwilling to seek professional help, she went to other mothers for support. Initially skeptical, she found that seasoned mothers with similar experiences were most patient and understanding.
Afraid of taking time away from her son, Adele learned to cope by taking scheduled time off for herself and gaining a healthy love for her now 4-year old son. But now she is afraid of going through the same challenge again. Adding a new member to the family is out of the question for now. Her love for Angelo is enough to keep her going day by day.
