A Celebration of the Music of Shane MacGowan to take place at Electric Picnic
The performance will be put on by Boys from the Black Stuff, a musical project and tribute band dedicated to performing songs from across MacGowan’s career.
A Celebration of the Music of Shane MacGowan is set to take place at Electric Picnic this Friday at 11:45 pm at the Survivors Stage.
The performance, put on by Boys from the Black Stuff, will host a number of surprise guests as well as classics from across Shane’s work with The Pogues, his solo material and his first band, The Nips.
Boys from the Black Stuff are a musical project and tribute band dedicated to performing songs from across MacGowan’s career. The group were formed by friends and close musical collaborators of the artist, including the Cronin brothers, whom MacGowan once described as “Pure Celtic Soul.”
They have previously performed at venues including The Spirit Store in Dundalk, The Boogaloo in London and other live sessions across Europe.
Meanwhile, a Shane MacGowan tribute album 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan is scheduled for release on November 13.
The project, put together by MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, brings together a wide range of Irish and international artists to reinterpret songs from the late singer’s catalogue and celebrate his legacy. Half of the artist royalties from the album will be donated to the Dublin Simon Community, which aims to provide support for those experiencing homelessness.
U2, Kingfishr, Bob Geldof, David Keenan, Jimmy Artache and Tom Creagh are among the most recent artists confirmed to feature on the record.
Currently, The Pogues are preparing for their winter Greatest Hits tour across Europe, the UK and Ireland, which includes three Irish dates – Dublin’s 3Arena on December 9, Belfast’s Telegraph Building on December 10 and Killarney’s Gleneagle Arena on December 12.
In other news, 80,000 are headed to Stradbally this weekend with Electric Picnic only days away. The main stage times and a sneak peek of what’s to come were released earlier this week, with highly-anticipated acts such as Lewis Capaldi, Gorillaz, Fontaines D.C., Sombr, Zara Larsson and more set to take the stage.
